Joseph S. Owmby
Joseph S. Owmby is a seasoned attorney who has gained the respect of the Harris County legal community by successfully prosecuting more than a thousand cases over his twenty-year career.
Loved by his clients and respected by his colleagues, Joe approaches each case with one intention—to win. Joe, a native of Kentucky, moved to Houston in 1982 after earning his bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University in 1972 and law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1982.
After a stint as an attorney with Exxon Corporation, Joe represented the people of Harris County as an Assistant District Attorney for more than 20 years. During his tenure in the D.A.’s office, Joe investigated and successfully prosecuted many of the highest profile criminal cases in the Houston area including serving as the lead prosecutor in the infamous Andrea Yates case.
On the defense side, Joe represents one of the Houston police officers accused in the 2010 beating of a teenage burglar suspect. Joe has tried several cases since becoming a defense attorney. Results have included a not guilty and two hung juries which resulted in negotiated results acceptable to the clients and far less burdensome than sentences recommended by prosecutors.
Joe is often the voice of experience and wisdom in the courtroom. Joe has conducted training in trial tactics, press relations and legal topics for prosecutors, police agencies and lawyers across the United States and in Canada. Joe lives in Houston with his wife Wilma and one of his adult children; his son is a United States naval officer currently on tour off the coast of Africa. In his spare time, Joe enjoys golfing and cooking.
